One of the things that we wanted to accomplish with this blog was to talk about tech’s pipeline, and where and how tech loses, and/or fails to recruit, a gender-balanced baseline of employees. If we look at Sweden as a country, and tech as a part of the Swedish economy, one of the central areas that challenges us with gender equality is combining being a parent with work. Men are underrepresented in taking out parental leave and caring for children. For example, only 9% of working-age men work part-time when their first child is 3-5 years old, whereas 45% of all working-age women do. Men take out 25% of all parental leave - women take out 75%. Men do 37% of temporary childcare (when kids are sick, etc.), compared to 63% of women.
