30hp – Architecture specification and safety analysis of autonomous transport systems

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

A strong current trend in the automotive industry is "autonomous transport systems". An example is a system of autonomous cars to transport people within a city. Another example is a system of trucks to transport material in a mine. Autonomous transport systems present new challenges in the area of safety, compared to traditional single vehicles. Firstly, the vehicles are driver-less meaning that no driver can react upon hazardous events to avoid accidents; instead a computer program needs to take the role of the driver. Secondly, the fact that it is a system of several vehicles and also a control center introduces new hazards related to interaction of vehicles, and defects in the control center.

In this MSc-project, the goal is firstly, to model the architecture of an autonomous transport system in order to perform safety analyses. Included in the task is to find the level of detail that needs to be modelled. Included is also to find a suitable language for representing the model. Secondly, the architectural model shall be used for safety analysis. A general aim is to automate and formalize as much as possible in the process of modelling and analysing the architecture.

  • Study literature on architecture specification and modelling, and safety analysis.
  • Decide upon a suitable modelling approach.
  • Study an actual transport system developed by Scania.
  • Model the architecture of the selected transport system.
  • Decide approach for analysing safety of the transport system.
  • Try to formalize and automate the analysis..
  • Specify education or specialization: M.Sc. in computer science, mechatronics, embedded systems, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, control theory.
