30 hp – Implementation of an estimation tool for the energy consumption of a HDV

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Scania is one of the leading European manufacturers of heavy‑duty vehicles (HDV), with global sales of 82’470 trucks, 8’310 buses and 8’520 engines in 2017. When it comes to energy consumption and global warming, we actively contribute to the necessary reduction of fuel consumption (FC) and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Scania uses amongst others an estimation tool for the energy consumption, to get a first impression about the expected numbers.

 

Background:

Scania has a myriad of components which can be combined into an HDV. Because of the many possible combinations it is difficult to give standard values for the fuel/energy consumption to the customer. Instead a tool is used to estimate the HDV’s properties based on the components chosen by the user.

To determine the fuel or electrical energy consumption, the longitudinal motion of the HDV are simulated on typical driving cycles. The resulting courses of speed and torque at the prime mover are simulated. In the final step the consumption or generation of energy is interpolated from the performance map of the combustion engine and/or the electrical machine.

The existing estimation tool for FC shall be reworked and extended to cover also hybrid- and battery-electrical powertrains in transient urban driving.

Target:

The outcome shall be a thesis report in English, about the implementation of the reworked estimation tool. The thesis can be published by the University. It shall also serve as technical report for the Traton Group, thus the companies Scania, MAN and Volkswagen Caminhões.

 

Assignment:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of prototypes for the sub-models of conventional, hybrid-electrical and battery-electrical powertrains for the estimation tool.
  • Compare the estimated energy consumption from the prototype tool to the recorded values from operational data and from other simulation programs.
