30 credits – AI HMI in future trucks

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

A thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project.


Artificial intelligence will have a profound effect on future transport systems and as a part of that it will affect how drivers interact with their vehicles. To ensure a premium level driver-vehicle interaction the design of AI in HMI will be investigated.


To design AI-related driver-vehicle interaction for different levels of automation, based on AI strategy and guidelines.


The assignment is to design user interfaces in a future heavy Scania truck for AI functionality. The work will be based on existing internal strategies for using AI in HMI and will address three different levels of automation:

  • SAE level 2, where the driver is responsible and the system is assisting the driver (AI functionality as support only)
  • SAE level 3, where the system is responsible with the driver as the fallback (AI as an agent/co-driver)
  • SAE level 4, where the system is fully responsible (AI as a “colleague”) 
  • The resulting user interface design should support safe, efficient and pleasurable driving and should also reflect the Scania brand values. The students will be working within the interaction design group, but with tight cooperation with the styling department.
  • Education:

    2 students pursuing a master related to interaction design (e.g. master in interaction design, civ ing within interaction design or master in cognitive science). Start date is January 2019. Estimated time needed is 6 months.
